ORIGINAL PREFACEThis little book contains the addresses given during the Clergy Retreat of the Diocese of Nova Scotia, at St. Augustine's Monastery, in Monastery, Antigonish County, in June, 1986. They were, of course, designed to be heard in the context of devotional exercises, and not to be read; but at the request of some of the retreatants, I have agreed to have them printed in their original form, with the addition of a few footnotes to acknowledge my sources and suggest further reading.
In this sixteen-hundredth anniversary year of the conversion of St. Augustine, upon whose works these meditations draw so heavily, it seems particularly appropriate to dedicate these pages to the Reverend Prior, Fr. Isidor, and his colleagues in the Order of St. Augustine, at Monastery, who have so often, and so graciously, been hosts to these retreats, and to the Reverend Canon Karl Tufts, who has been, for nearly a quarter of a century, the chief organizer and promoter of retreats for the clergy of the diocese.
