For many years the Society has sponsored numerous religious retreats for interested laypeople, students and clergy. Currently the Society sponsors retreats at the Bethany Centre Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Martha, in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Under the direction of a retreat leader, an average group of 15 people attend these events, which focus on a particular spiritual theme of the Christian religion. Structured around the Daily Offices of Morning and Evening Prayer, Compline, and the Holy Communion, as found in the Book of Common Prayer, and combined with periods of observed silence, these retreats offer participants the opportunity to enter into an ascetic discipline of prayer and meditation, in keeping with the traditional practices and disciplines of the catholic church. Through a series of
daily addresses, opportunities for private prayer and study, and a
chance for fellowship, these retreats provide a "just enough structure"
weekend that most find thoroughly refreshing. The address and
discussion periods usually
last 45 minutes to 1 hour (except Friday evening). There is plenty of
free time for walking, relaxing or spending time together. Reading
material is usually provided in keeping with the theme and topic of
each retreat, though participants are encouraged to bring their own
materials too. Accommodations are single rooms with a sink and linens
provided. Recent Past Retreats: "C.S. Lewis' The Four Loves" "Jesus Christ: The Door Open in Heaven" |
