For quite a number of years, the St. Peter's Cathedral Youth Group met at regular intervals—approximately once a month. The Youth Group was for young people ages 13 to 18. However, for the past three years, we have been trying a new approach to youth involvement in the life of the parish. Rather than having one "youth group" we have several different groups to which young people can belong, and we want to stress the involvement of young people as integrated into the total life of the parish.
Young people are involved at St. Peter's Cathedral in a number of ways. Some are involved as Altar servers, or by membership in the Junior Choir, by helping with the Sunday School, by helping with special projects when requested, and by their attendance at and participation in church services.
During 2005, a new “Girls’ Group” was formed, under the leadership of two of the mothers, Edith Rogers and Elaine Cormier. This is for girls age 11 and over. The group has chosen the name GASP, which stands for "Girls At St. Peter's".
The two current adult leaders of the GASP Group for 2007 are Edith Rogers and Janice MacKinnon.
Some of the activities that GASP has undertaken since the group first began could be described as follows: The focus of the group is aimed at Christian fellowship, aiding the church in particular and society in general, and having lots of fun.
Some events have included running the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, a sleigh ride, bowling, cooking and knitting classes, games nights, Stations of the Cross services in Lent, Smitty's Restaurant Spaghetti Supper Fundraiser, and a book library. There are a number of interesting plans in place for activities during the year 2007.
Thank you to all members of the congregation who have lent a hand with GASP.
